How to Take the Best Photos for Your Custom Pet Portrait
A lifelike pet portrait begins with clear reference photos. The more accurately we can see your pet’s features, colors, and expressions, the more faithfully our artisans can recreate their personality in wool.
To help us capture everything that makes your pet special, follow these five simple photo tips.
1. Choose Soft, Natural Lighting
Photograph your pet near a bright window or outdoors on a cloudy day. Soft daylight reveals their true coat color, fur texture, eyes, and facial features.
Avoid using flash or taking photos in dark rooms, as harsh lighting can alter colors, hide important details, and create strong shadows.
2. Photograph Them at Eye Level
Try to position the camera at the same height as your pet’s face. You can sit on the floor, kneel, or encourage them to rest somewhere comfortable.
Eye-level photos help us understand their natural proportions, including the shape of their muzzle, the position of their ears, and the distinctive expression in their eyes.
3. Show Us Their True Personality
The best reference photo is not always the most perfectly posed one. Choose images that capture the expressions you know and love—whether it’s a playful smile, a curious head tilt, a sleepy gaze, or a proud and alert look.
These familiar expressions help us create a portrait that feels unmistakably like your pet.
4. Include Their Special Features
Every pet has little details that make them one of a kind. Please take close-up photos of any distinctive markings or features, such as:

We recommend providing 5–10 clear photos rather than relying on only two or three. Include front, side, and three-quarter views whenever possible, along with a few close-ups of the eyes, nose, coat, and other important details.
